4 Things About Prohibition You May Not Know
1-Gangsters of the 1920s were notable for their involvement in organized crime during Prohibition, the period from 1920 to 1933 the purchase and production of alcoholic beverages were against the law. One unique aspect of 1920s gangsters is how they became cultural icons, shaping both the criminal underworld and pop culture.
2-A distinct feature of their operations was the highly organized and business-like approach they took to running illegal enterprises, especially bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution. Gang leaders like Al Capone in Chicago, Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky in New York built criminal empires, often they found corrupt politicians and law enforcement, to help protect their businesses. Arnold Rothstein, known as The Father of the Mafia, because he bankrolled prohibition for Lansky and Luciano.
3-Another unique piece of information was the rise of the "Tommy Gun" or Thompson submachine gun, became identified with mob violence during this era. Gangsters would use these rapid-fire weapons which shot .45 Caliber bullets in dramatic street shootouts, cementing their image in films and media.
4-Despite their criminal activities, some gangsters were becoming Robin Hood figures in their communities as they shared their wealth. Al Capone made sure that all the residents of his hometown of Cicero had enough coal to heat their homes for the brutal winters. They also ensured that local businesses had protection. This gave them a legacy, the bad guy vs. the good guy.
