How did Capone climb the ladder of mafia success?
"You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than a kind word alone." Al Capone
Al Capone as a public speaker? Yeah right. Did Capone use persuasion or brute force, and did you know that he utilized the power of public speaking and communication to grow his empire? Research has shown that his mentor, Johnny Torrio, advised him to learn how to speak. Public speaking taught him how to be a better communicator and persuade others without using physical force. Although he wasn't a polished, formal speaker standing behind a lectern or on a podium, his skills were used during one-on-one conversations. Whether he employed intimidation, negotiation, or charmed reporters and the public, he always remained cool and calm, rarely losing his temper. He stayed in control and kept others off balance with his unique interaction.
He also utilized his skills through daily interviews with the press, and he was aware of how he was perceived. Capone understood that his speech was a crucial part of his public image. He complained about being misquoted in the press, feeling that some portrayed him as too eloquent while others made him sound unintelligent.
He employed different speaking styles: Capone's communication varied according to the context. He would speak in Neapolitan at home and use a "street poetry" type of language with his associates. Al was a street-wise man.
He was charismatic and had the ability to influence people. Capone is known for his famous quote: "You can get much further with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone."
The quote suggests he understood the importance of both charm (the "kind word") and intimidation (the "gun") in achieving his goals, implying a certain level of skill in influencing others through communication, even if not through formal public speaking.
He embraced the media: Capone understood the power of publicity, often holding press conferences. However, he also grew wary of how the media portrayed him.
In summary, although there is no evidence of formal public speaking lessons, Al Capone's experiences and interactions with diverse individuals and the media significantly contributed to his ability to communicate effectively in various situations and project a public image.
“Don't mistake my kindness for weakness. I am kind to everyone, but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember about me.” Al Capone
